The 39th Annual American Music Awards took place at the Nokia Theatre in LA yesterday. We’ve wrapped up the top moments, the best dresses and delivered a fill list of winners.
The Red Carpet
It was all about metallic’s (link to Tony Bannister story) on the red carpet this year. Jennifer Hudson was looking hot in a lamé mini dress while Modern Family’s Julie Bowen rocked a long-sleeved metallic striped mini dress ahead of her preseting duties. Heidi Klum, who was also a presenter on the night, looked stuning in a laser-cut silver Giles Deacon dress.
Selena Gomez and her boyfriend Justin Bieber made an entrance in a white vintage Packard Super 8 that brought Old Hollywood to mind. The pair were suitably dressed with Bieber in a black tuxedo with a bow tie and the gorgeous Selena in a metallic, champagne satin Giorgio Armani gown that featured a thigh-high split.
Katy Perry walked the red carpet without husband Russell Brand in one of three outfits for the night. Her red carpet look was a Japanese motifed Vivienne Westwood dress in pale pink. She teamed the strapless, floor length dress with some seriously bright purple shoes.
Taylor Swift won hearts on the red carpet in a stunning gold glitter Reem Acra dress and her hair in a soft, low side ponytail.
The Performances
Lionel Richie introduced the first act of the night; Nicki Minaj. DJ David Guetta joined the star on stage and together they kicked off the show with performances of ‘Turn Me On’ and ‘Super Bass’. No Nicki Minaj performance is complete without a crazy costume and the AMA’s were no exception. Minaj wore metallic space-aged getup with speakers on her chest.
50 Cent introduced Chris Brown who performed ‘All Back’ and ‘Say It With Me’ with his band. The performance boasted over-the-top choreographed dance moves typical of Brown.
Justin Bieber performed his Christmas hit ‘Mistletoe’ wearing an all-white suit.
Christina Aguilera took the stage with Maroon 5 to perform ‘Moves Like Jagger’ but it wasn’t her performance that sparked backlash. The star’s silver, mini Herve Leger dress sparked speculation online that the singer may be pregnant.
Katy Perry wore an elaborate space-age pink dress to perform an acoustic rendition (complere with a pink guitar) of ‘The One That Got Away’ during which she dramatically removed her wedding ring, further sparking speculation that her and Brand’s marriage is on the rocks.
J-Lo caused a bit of a stir with her performance of ‘Papi’ in which she essentially recreated her Fiat commercial, even going so far as to drive a Fiat 500 on stage! And it didn’t stop there, the newly single star rocked a glittering bodysuit that looked almost like an exact replica of the outfit Britney Spears wore in her Toxic film clip and brough rumoured squeeze dancer Casper Smart on stage with her, performing ‘On the Floor’ with Pitbull. Reports say the pair were spotted indulging in a series of public affection at the after party later that night. Lopez also took the stage with Will.I.Am for the performance of his new single ‘Hard’.
Lopez’s ex Marc Anthony also took the stage with Pitbull to perform his single ‘Rain Over Me’.
LMFAO closed the night with a performance as wacky as we’ve come to expect from them. Justin Bieber came on stage with them wearing a pair of cheetah print leggings and a, ‘Sexy and I Know It’ shirt. The huge show ended with the LMFAO duo and their dancers stripping down to smiley-faced underwear and David Hasselhoff coming on stage in a pair of tight shorts with a smiley face on front and ‘Don’t Judge Me’ on the back. The shorts were teamed with a ‘Don’t Hassel The Hoff’ shirt. It was a strange, albeit hilarious, end to the night.
