The End Of Everything by award-winning author Megan Abbott revolves around the dramatic disappearance of a 13-year-old girl. It has been dubbed ‘The Virgin Suicides meets The Lovely Bones,’ (which are both bestselling books that became popular films).
A thrilling, coming-of-age novel about two young girls growing up in a climate filled with jealousy, secrecy and lies, The End Of Everything is very hard to put down. It is not for easily-offended readers as it deals with confronting subjects, like paedophilia.
The plot:
1980s, America. Thirteen-year-old Evie vanished one night after school. The only clue to her disappearance is a maroon-coloured car that Evie’s best friend, Lizzie, saw earlier that day.
As panic spreads through the town and a local man, Mr Verver, is also found to be missing, everyone looks to Lizzie for answers. Lizzie, meanwhile, becomes obsessed with Evie’s charming father and glamorous older sister, and reflects on her own life.
Book Review:
“Lizzie’s quest to find her missing best friend Evie, and make Evie’s seemingly perfect family whole again, is riveting and heartbreaking. Abbott’s lyrical prose gives voice to a girl in the grips of profound loss and transformation. This is a book that gets under your skin and stays there.” – author Jennifer McMahon.
