The Wellness Wheel, a model developed by Dr. Peggy Swarbrick in the 90’s, is still a powerful tool used by practitioners to guide in this journey, offering a holistic approach to wellness that encompasses all aspects of our lives.
The Origins of the Wellness Wheel
The Wellness Wheel is rooted in the eight dimensions of wellness as conceptualised by Dr. Margaret (Peggy) Swarbrick in the 1990s. Dr. Swarbrick is the Associate Director at the Center of Alcohol & Substance Use Studies and a Research Professor at Rutgers University’s Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology in New Brunswick, USA.
Her wellness model, originally designed for mental health clients, has been widely adopted across various fields of health and wellness. It emphasises that wellness is not merely the absence of illness but a dynamic process of change and growth. According to Dr. Swarbrick, wellness is “a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential”.
Understanding the Eight Dimensions
The Wellness Wheel encompasses eight interconnected dimensions: Occupational, Environmental, Intellectual, Spiritual, Emotional, Physical, Financial, and Social. Each dimension plays a crucial role in overall well-being, and neglecting any one of them can lead to an imbalance that affects our health and quality of life.
- Occupational Wellness: This dimension is about finding personal satisfaction and enrichment through work, school, or volunteer activities. It involves pursuing roles that are meaningful and aligned with our values and goals. When we are fulfilled in our occupational pursuits, we often experience a sense of purpose and motivation that enhances our overall well-being.
- Environmental Wellness: Our surroundings profoundly impact our mental and physical health. But it’s not just about the physical aspects—it’s also about recognizing our body’s needs and responding to them in a balanced and healthy way.
- Financial Wellness: Financial health is often overlooked, but it plays a significant role in our overall well-being. Managing finances wisely, planning for the future, and reducing financial stress contribute to a sense of security and freedom that allows us to focus on other areas of wellness.
- Social Wellness: Social connections are a fundamental part of human life. Social wellness involves building healthy relationships, creating a strong support system, and maintaining a sense of belonging.
