A host of Hollywood celebs joined British Royalty on the ‘green rug’ at the Alice in Wonderland premiere in London on Thursday.
Braving torrential rain, Hollywood royalty and stars of the film Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway made their way across the Atlantic for the star-studded premiere, but were almost overshadowed by real life royalty- Prince Charles and wife Camilla Parker Bowles, who also made an appearance at the premiere.
Hathaway who plays the White Queen in the film wore a brown sequinned Vivienne Westwood gown teamed with metallic gold jacket, and tried to put a positive spin on the dreary weather, “I love London, I love the rain!” she said.
When asked whether she felt the film adaptation was a feminist approach on the classic story, she replied: ‘I definitely would agree with that. This is Alice ten years later, when she goes to Wonderland she’s experiencing a return to self and I think it’s a wonderful take on it”.
The film itself is a fresh adaptation of the classic children’s book by Lewis Carroll, and sends Alice back through her childhood adventures to be reunited with old friends after a decade apart.
Hoards of adoring fans turned out in force to catch a glimpse of Johnny Depp, who plays the Mad Hatter in the film. Depp wore a dark suit paired with open shirt and dishevelled hair and graciously signed autographs much to the delight of the screaming (mostly female) crowd.
Charles and Camilla chatted to the cast and senior crew at the event, which was being held in aid of the Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts- an organisation which offers children the chance to access world art.
Camilla opted for a royal blue floor-length Vivienne Westwood taffeta dress, and when complimented on her outfit she replied: “Oh it’s beautiful, but I can’t tell you how tight it is. I can’t breathe in, and goodness knows how I’m going to sit down”, she said.
Aussie darling and star of the film Mia Wasikowska looked stunning in her Valentino frock albeit hardly recognisable. The pretty actress recently chopped her long wavy golden locks and is now rocking a super cute pixie cut.
Kooky actress Helena Bonham Carter, who plays the Red Queen in the film, didn’t fail to draw attention in her billowing white taffeta prom dress, heart shaped earrings and customised clutch bearing the face of her villainous character in the movie.
Helena was joined by her hubby and director of the film, the equally eccentric Tim Burton, who is also famous for his quirky adaptations of classic tales such as Sweeney Todd and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Explaining his inspiration behind the remake, Burton said: ‘I didn’t think there was a definitive version of it. There’s been 20 something versions of it and none of them ever connected to me. So the idea was to take that material, set it in a different story making her a little bit older and exploring the idea of someone’s internal life”. He said.
Also making an appearance on the night was Avril Lavigne (who sings the Alice in Wonderland theme song) in a figure hugging Dolce & Gabbana frock, and British models Daisy Lowe– who opted for a barely-there outfit despite freezing temperatures, and a more modestly dressed Lily Cole.
Here at RESCU, we can’t wait to fall down the rabbit hole and take a trip to Wonderland ourselves when the movie hits cinemas in Australia on March 4!
