Confused about choosing your new car? We know the feeling. With so many models on the market and so many factors to consider, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by choice. We consulted Scott Nargar, Product Planning Manager at Hyundai to find out his top tips to consider to help you choose a car.
RESCU: What questions should buyers ask when choosing a car?
Scott Nargar: The top priority is looking at the safety rating. On new cars this is something that should not be compromised. In a second hand vehicle however, the car’s history is a must so you know upfront if it has been in an accident (for potentially structural defects and faulty safety systems e.g. air bags). Make sure the correct paper work accompanies the vehicle and the service history is up to date. A REVS check is must when considering a second hand car.
RESCU: What kind of research should buyers do before buying a car?
Scott Nargar: Take a test drive and see for yourself. Secondly, safety features and ratings from credible bodies such as ANCAP and the NRMA. These are easily accessible online. A knowledge of up to date motoring reviews would be beneficial. Australia’s Best Cars Awards magazine is another useful tool when choosing a vehicle. You may not like the winner in a particular category but this awards program publishes all the scores from the winner to the vehicle at the bottom of the scoring table so you can see how your choice stacks up against the best in its class.
RESCU: What are the biggest risks and mistakes people make when purchasing a vehicle?
Scott Nargar: Choose a car that suits your lifestyle. If you have children or need child restraints, take them with you and make sure they fit and are positioned for practical everyday use. Also make sure that your preferred driving position is not compromised by the positioning of the child restraint. The same goes with golf clubs, travel bags, sporting equipment, wheel chairs anything that you are required to carry on a regular basis. People often get caught up in the moment and the salesman could leave you feeling pressured into signing a contact without making sure the vehicle meets your needs and lifestyle requirements.
RESCU: What are the top 3 considerations buyers should keep in mind when purchasing a car?
Scott Nargar:
1. Safety is definitely number one, never compromise on safety
2. Value for money and warranty are the second most important considerations
3. Finally an enjoyable drive, don’t waste your hard earned money on something you don’t enjoy driving.
