Lipstick is the epitome of classic beauty; chic, glamorous and now the last word in style. Years of lipgloss addiction may have left you with chapped lips and clueless about the best new formulations but we are here to tell you that anyone CAN wear lipstick – and wear it well. It’s as simple as choosing the right shade for your skin tone and right formula for your look.
We ask the makeup artist, Rae Morris, just how to choose the right lip shade…
“Here’s the trick. Which do you prefer fuchsia pink or tangerine orange? And yes you have to choose one! In most cases if you picked the pink you suit and should wear ‘cool’ shades as pink itself is cool. If orange was your number one choice then you probably have a warm skin tone and should stick to warm coloured lipsticks.
So if you chose pink, you should always tend to look for cool or blue undertone shades. Think cool reds (verging on wine shades and even burgundy), all pink shades, pink-based nudes and pink-based browns.
For those of you who picked the orange; go for orange brick-based reds, anything warm in general, warm browns, peachy nudes, all bronze shades and you can even pump up your lips with a hit of gold!
There are a SELECT few people who can get away with both cool and warm based lipstick shades however please don’t mix the two! Also, for those who have no idea and are confused, or who think they suit neither, opt for wine shades like mahogany or plum; they are the only hues on the colour spectrum that are both cool and warm therefore universal suiting shades.”

New Lipsticks Rescu. Loves…
CLINIQUE Chubby Stick Moisturising Lip Colour
(See above image) The Chubby Stick offers a sheer hint of colour that glides on effortlessly, leaving behind a natural blush colour and sheen. The colour simultaneously tints the lips so that frequent applications are only necessary if you are suffering from dry or chapped lips. The moisturising formula is enriched with a blend of butters, oils and antioxidants and contains shea butter, mango seed butter and jojoba seed oil. Lips are left soft, supple and soothed.
Rescu. Recommends: Everyone would look fabulous in the multi-tonal ‘Richer Raisin’, whereas warmer toned gals would be more suited to ‘Mega Melon’; and those who have cool skin tones try ‘Woppin’ Watermelon’. We love ‘Chunky Cherry’; it’s a gorgeous soft red that’s both office and date appropriate.
RRP $35. Available at selected pharmacies, David Jones and Myer.
Guerlain Rouge Automatique
A beautiful lipstick that took inspiration from a 1936 Guerlain product of the same name. We love the all class packaging and the unbelievable shade range. The formula is shiny and yet long-lasting. This is our choice for red carpet va va voom! According to Isabelle Hébant, (Guerlain makeup and marketing manager) “It is intended to have a second skin effect on the lips, which is accomplished by a low gradient fusion point — when the formula touches the lips, it becomes liquid”. The result? Vivid, bold colours in a luxe, soft formula.
