If there’s one beauty trend that never goes out of style, it’s radiant, dewy skin. In every beauty editor’s, model’s and makeup artist’s beauty bag lies the secret weapon to that coveted au naturale glow; the illuminator.
by Anna McDougall
Despite is simple appearance, the illuminator, or highlighter can do more damage then good if used incorrectly. No one wants to leave the house looking like you jumped off the Eurovision stage!
Coming in all forms of powders, creams, sticks and lotions the pearlescent formula of the humble illuminator is designed for an instant solution to youthful, glowing skin.
So, how do we use it properly?
- As with anything makeup in the face department, moderation is key. Too much and you’ll be looking like the Ice Queen herself. Choose your illuminator to match your skin tone; gold, pearly white, peach or bronze. Or go for a violet, rose or pink shade for a little more oomph.
- Make sure your skin is hydrated and moisturised before applying an illuminator or highlighter and they are a nightmare for dry and flaking skin.
- Apply by dabbing with a brush or sturdy finger over your foundation, but under your powder (if you’re using it).
- If you’re unsure of where to apply you illuminator or highlighter, think of where the light hits your skin. On your cheek bones, your brow bone, temples and bridge of your nose. Don’t be afraid to include collarbones for radiance that extends beyond your face.
Michael Brown, Rescu. Beauty Expert’s Highlighter Tips:
“Highlighter is my best friend as it can make your look from drab to fab in seconds. Foundation does come in dewy textures, but don’t only rely on your foundation to give skin a glow as you may then be heavy handed.
Add highlighter over your foundation in a dabbing application with fingertips to really fuse and melt the product into skin.
Above cheekbones, under brow, cupids bow are the main areas for highlighter and only apply in centre of face if not oily. This will create light, lower the look of thick foundation and bring forward these areas for face structure, definitely a must have product!”
