The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala (or, as we know it, The Met Ball) celebrated its 65th year of kicking off the museum’s annual fashion exhibition and the stakes were higher than ever when it came to stepping out at one of the year’s most fashionable events in style. The exclusive event includes a cocktail hour followed by a formal dinner and is amongst the most extravagant evenings of the A-list social calendar.

The Met Ball has been New York’s ‘Night of Nights’ since its inception in 1948. This year’s exhibition is ‘PUNK: Chaos to Couture’ and as usual, stars incorporated this theme into their red carpet looks. The event was presided over by this year’s co-chairs, actress Rooney Mara, Moda Operandi creative director Lauren Santo Domingo, Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci and Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
The 2013 guest list was as star-studded as ever. Although Kim Kardashian has been rumoured to have been intentionally left off the list in the past, she and beau Kanye West were amongst those to grace the red carpet. In fact, event host Anna Wintour is said to have dined with the pregnant starlet the previous night. Other stars in attendance included hollywood sweethearts Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Watson and Anne Hathaway, songstresses Beyonce and Nicki Minaj and the fashionista Olsen twins.
The red carpet was a true spectacle of avant-garde fashion and beauty. Katie Holmes kept it simple in clean-cut Calvin Klein whilst Nina Dobrev chose a courageous black Monique Lhuillier number. Anna Hathaway shocked the crowds with a striking blonde hairstyle. Katy Perry ditched her regular candy colours for a royal palette of blues and golds. She teamed Dolce & Gabbana with a traditional crown and puffed-out locks in a reference to the Met’s art collection.
