We’ve all seen them- impossibly beautiful and achingly easily dressed models stepping out on the streets after a shoot or a show and you think- “She makes it look so easy, why can’t I look like that”…
Well, for a start most of us ARE NOT models! But, that doesn’t mean you can’t take a leaf of out their leggy books and copy their off duty looks!
I could pick most models at random for this post but I thought I would stick to my Top 3 who I think nail the smart casual look to aplomb…
Miranda, Rosie and Cara (do I even need last names!) always make street chic look simple. Usually these gals spend most of their working lives being dressed up like human dolls so all three opt for comfort over constriction when pounding the pavement.
Each is slightly different in their dressing- Miranda is the epitome of elegance while Rosie makes Paparazzi shots look like a walk in the park and Cara offers us a little quirk and a dash of WGAF (Who Gives A F***) I think whoever you are, one of these ladies will definitely strike a style chord and all three have a fail-safe mantra “Coat.Jeans.Tote!” So, let’s get cracking…
Sure, we’ve all seen the trends on the runways (and usually on one of these three!) for coats this season and no matter what your body shape there is sure to be one option that can become a close friend in your closet.
MK’s go to coats are longer and textured, even the classic trench gets a gong, while Rosie favours a wilder side with angora and vintage elements. Cara keeps warm with a leather biker or Varsity bomber- usually thrown over a band tee or cute as a button jumper. Hell, if you can afford it get all three!
Be it designer, hand-me-down or bargain basement a good simple coat will always be a winner in the wardrobe.
Yes a dreaded retail excursion for some and a literal uniform for others, jeans are probably the best but most difficult item to shop for. For these girls though jeans and leather trousers feature prominently in their repertoire. And they are ALWAYS skinny and always mid to high-waisted…
Don’t panic if you are not of model proportion- fitted high-waisted jeans can make your legs look miles longer and if you pair them with longer more flattering coats and blouses we won’t even notice your thicker thighs! Or, if you’re too timid do what most are doing this season and pair your coats with a much more figure friendly boyfriend jean.
Cute purses and clutches are fine for some but if you are a busy model with castings, commercials and empires to run a tiny bag could never contain their contents. I haven’t met a model that ever carries anything less than a mobile apartment and a tote with its longer lines and deeper sides is perfect. I would suggest quality is key with these- budget bigger and you will have it for a lifetime as a good leather tote is built to take a bashing!
The print choices are endless but I think simplicity is key. Just remember to find one with enough compartments- no one wants to make a Mary Poppins of themselves endlessly scratching around for your lippy, pens or phone.
The above three key components might seem ridiculously simple but I have always found the biggest mistakes are made with the most obvious options. These girls don’t go out of their way to make us hate them with their beautiful bodies and designer duds, so copy their key points and remember- imitation is the sincerest form of flattery- and when it’s as simple as these three steps you will be on your way to off-duty/on trend hotness in a flash.
