Between owning a dance school with husband Michael Miziner, modelling for brands like Myer, being a switched-on mum to daughter Violet, presenting for the Seven Network and, more recently, becoming a certified health coach, Rachael Finch is one seriously busy woman.
With all this to juggle and a whole lot of travelling on the cards it would be understandable if a strict diet and exercise routine fell to the wayside, but this Aussie powerhouse makes it work and even manages to maintain that model body with a few foodie indulgences along the way.
We spoke to Rachael about what she eats on a day-to-day basis, how she indulges and, perhaps most importantly, how she keeps balance in her life and doesn’t let the way her body looks rule her mind.
RESCU: Can you share your top three tips for getting your best body ahead of a major event?
Rachael Finch: I try to eat foods as close to their natural state as possible, and using healthy, natural options such as hummus, cottage cheese or avocado, rather than salt and sauces, to flavour foods.
I drink lots of fresh water and limit caffeine intake to one cappuccino in the morning. What you put in will always be what you get out so I always think fresh and lots of green foods for repairing and restoring!
RESCU: With all this in mind, how do you ensure you keep perspective and don’t get too body-obsessed?
Rachael Finch: I follow a healthy lifestyle and incorporate wellness into my life because it makes me feel good. I love searching for new ways to feel amazing and I think balance is very important.
RESCU: What’s your favourite foodie indulgence?
Rachael Finch: Anything chocolate gets my tick of approval! I love a raw tiramisu using healthy ingredients, or just good old dark chocolate on its own is delicious.
RESCU: And your favourite clean treat?
Rachael Finch: My favourite clean treat is oven baked salmon with the skin on, served with sweet potato mash and steamed vegetables.
RESCU: How do you maintain a healthy diet while travelling?
Rachael Finch: It’s challenging sometimes, but I try to make time to keep up my normal routine. This includes exercising, getting a goodnights sleep and eating healthily. Planning ahead is important and I always put my health first, so finding time is a priority.
RESCU: Do you have a go-to snack for when you’re on the run or strapped for time?
Rachael Finch: I try not to snack, but I always have healthy snacks on hand in case I get hungry. I love mixed dried nuts or whole pieces of fresh fruit.
RESCU: What does your exercise regime look like?
Rachael Finch: I try to be physically active everyday. Mostly I like to do exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise, things that I can incorporate into my everyday life. I take a balanced approached to my exercise regime, including a range of different activities such as yoga, Pilates, swimming and running. In the summer, I try to move my workouts outdoors as much as possible to take advantage of the beautiful warm weather and fresh air.
RESCU: Do you believe in detoxes?
Rachael Finch: If a detox means taking healthy steps to eliminate toxins from the body then yes, I believe in it. I think they should be done using wholesome ingredients not with powders or ingredients we can’t pronounce.
RESCU: What does your day on a plate look like?
Rachael Finch: At the moment I love starting my day with a yummy smoothie made with banana, mango, oats, fresh dates, spinach and Vitasoy Coconut Milk. I usually have a massive salad for lunch that includes greens, pumpkin, avocado, sun-dried tomato and pine nuts. I have an early dinner, around 5pm, that contains lots of steamed veggies, tofu, fish, beans and occasionally chicken. I eat to how I feel and follow seasonal eating habits.
RESCU: If you could sum up your health philosophy in one sentence, what would it be?
Rachael Finch: Treat your body like a temple – we only get one this lifetime.
