Lively shows how a simple hairstyle can be worn on the red carpet, and with the help of hair expert Richard Kavanagh, we’ll show you how you can achieve a red carpet side ponytail at home in just eight easy steps.
Side Ponytail How To
Step 1: Spray hair all over with dry shampoo.
Step 2: Sprinkle hair powder through the top surface of the hair and shake through with your hands.

Step 3: Decide which way your side ponytail is going and tuck the hair behind your ear on the opposite side. Gather all hair in a sweeping motion from that ear and pull around to the side of your ponytail. The sweeping motion will ensure that the hair is evenly distributed around the head.
Step 4: With one hand, hold what will be the base of the ponytail in place. With your other hand, pull the rest of the hair from around the face and tuck behind the ear. At this stage, hair should be behind both ears and distributed in the correct position to tie.
Step 5: Grab the hair and use a piece of elastic to tie the ponytail in place. Elastic is preferred to ensure hair is not being pulled through a hair tie and losing the natural texture. Cut off excess elastic once tied.
Step 6: Take a small piece of hair from the back of the ponytail and wrap around the base of the ponytail to cover the elastic.
Step 7: Spray the base of the ponytail with elastic and set with hairdryer on a low to medium heat.
Step 8: To finish the look, use hair spray to position hair around the head. Richard Kavanagh recommends lifting the hair as you spray to accentuate cheekbones.
