Stella McCartney has joined forces with PETA. Famed for her commitment to animal rights and a vegetarian lifestyle, the British fashion designer is taking her activism one step further by appearing in a PETA video looking into the leather industry. She joins a list of dedicated PETA ambassadors including Penelope Cruz, Christie Turlington and Khloe Kardashian.
Stella McCartney has joined with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to launch an anti-leather campaign.
The fashion designer has fronted a viral video hitting out against the trade, revealing cows killed for their skins are castrated, branded and dehorned, as well as having their tails cut off, without painkillers and many are skinned and dismembered while still conscious.
The videos – which will be launched on blogs and social networking websites twitter and Facebook – also detail how chemicals used to treat the animals’ skin to prevent it from rotting harm workers’ health and can pollute nearby soil and water supplies, allegedly leading to increased rates of cancer.
Stella says in the clip, “As a designer, I like to work with fabrics that don’t bleed; that’s why I avoid all animal skins. “Please join me in exploring the huge variety of fashionable shoes, belts, purses and wallets that aren’t the product of a cow’s violent death.”
