Hello Possums! Dame Edna Everage is finally cracking the beauty pageant scene. Miss Universe Australia, Monika Radulovic will wear a bespoke national costume, inspired by the iconic character when she sashays down the Miss Universe catwalk.
Unveiling the costume on Sunrise, Monika spoke highly of the design saying, ” I think it will be a great talking point. I love it.” The eye-catching design by Timothy Cubbo beat out four other designs in a contest held up Elucent Skincare.
The people’s choice outfit, accentuates Monika’s fit figure with large white shoulder pads, harking back to the sails of the Sydney Opera House.
It’s not the first time Miss Universe Australia’s national costume has caused a stir among the fashion community. The large glasses perched on Miss Australia’s head will need to be held up and are sure to be quite a spectacle under the dizzying lights of the pageant.
Life hasn’t always been glitz and glamour for the 24 year old. After fleeing war torn Bosnia with her parents at age four, young Monika arrived in Australia as a refugee.
“My first memories of Australia are visiting my mum in hospital after she gave birth to my baby brother,” Radulovic recently explained to Yahoo!. “I don’t really have any memories prior to that – I don’t remember any of the scary stuff that my parents dealt with back in Bosnia.”
Before being crowned Miss Australia, the brunette beauty completed an honours degree in Psychology and hopes to raise awareness for Cure Brain Cancer. She will also be familiar to many young women as the face of White Glo.
