Feel like you’re stuck in the mood doldrums? RESCU’s Confidence Expert, Colleen Cuneo, teaches us how to change our state of mind.
Would it empower you to know that it takes nothing more than a decision to make real changes in your life? And what if you knew you could wake up every morning and respond to the world in the way you wanted to?
In my work, I have met many people who do not believe that they have the power to change their lives. Modern society has taught people to be dependant on things or people outside of themselves to feel a certain way. But changing your emotional state is actually very easy – so easy in fact it may have you wondering why nobody has told you about it sooner!
Try this exercise, slouch in your chair, and breathe very shallow breaths, do this for a couple of minutes and notice how you feel. It’s possible you feel flat, low in energy and possibly sad or depressed.
Now sit up straight and breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth and focus on your forward and peripheral vision. Do this for at least two minutes and notice the difference. You will feel calmer, clearer and more motivated – and you didn’t need to go anywhere or buy anything to make it happen.
I have watched people sit and do these exercises and they are faced with resistance. If you find this happens, simply give yourself permission to change your state. Remember you are the only thinker in your head and using statements such as, “I allow myself to feel positive”, or “I give myself permission to have clarity” will help to remind yourself that you have choice and that you are in charge.
So what is it that gives people the desire to give up or shut down from happiness?
Need for perfection: my advice to anyone who is looking for freedom and happiness is to stop trying to be perfect. If you want to be truly happy, I recommend aiming for 50% approval in life and of yourself. I have never met a perfect person and I doubt I ever will.
Food and lifestyle: play a major role in our ability to change our state in a positive way. Take notice of what you put into your body and avoid too much sugar, preservatives, alcohol and coffee as these substances can be a fast track to negative state changes.
Need for constant outside stimulation: Practise being along without any outside influences such as the TV, a magazine or a mobile phone – you might be amazed at how much resistance your mind puts up, particularly if it is used to being stimulated externally.
Judgement: Society is constantly inviting you to judge yourself and others. This is the fastest way to disconnect from having a fulfilling life experience.
The greatest gift you can give yourself is the knowledge that you have choice in how you feel. In my opinion, a happy person is one who can be alone without any outside influence and truly like the company they keep in those quiet moments.
