If you have trouble tracking your spending and want to be able to afford that dress by Friday night, why not set yourself the challenge of going a whole day without spending a dollar? The Australian Securities and Investment Commission found that in 2012 Australians were spending an average $184 a day on general living costs so going a whole day without spending could mean some serious savings.
There’ll be a few expenses you’ll have to cover before your allocated day (a full tank of petrol and a fridge full of groceries will help), but once you’re reaping the rewards of your challenge you’ll never want to go back. To get you going, we’ve come up with some top tips for cutting that budget down to zero.

Planning makes perfect – The number one rule for a successful spend-free day is a well considered plan. No stopping for a smoothie when your stomach starts to rumble or ducking out of the office for a lunch date, you’ll need to have all your cravings catered for before you leave the house. If you’re a monster in the morning prepare your lunch the night before.
The caffeine hurdle – It’s likely that the biggest challenge of your spend-free day will strike before you even make it to work – how to get through the day without buying that morning coffee? It’s a tough one, but trust us, it can be done. If it’s a hot beverage you need, why not take some tea into the office? You’ll be doing your digestive system a service as well as saving coin. If you really can’t handle a whole day without java, pack a flask. Coffee from home is a fraction of the price and you’ll still have your beloved buzz.
Socialise in the sunshine – Most indoor activities require expenditure but there’s a whole world of open-air entertainment to be explored. Don’t panic if you’re not an adrenaline junkie, it’s not all rock climbing and bush walks. What about enjoying the autumnal colour with a peaceful picnic in the park? Or perhaps a romantic stroll along the sand? Your urge to splurge could be keeping you from enjoying your gorgeous surrounds.
Do not go to the shops – in fact, don’t go near them. This might seem a little obvious, but avoiding your favourite boutiques will be harder than it sounds, particularly if you work in a city. It might be tempting to stroll through the shopping strip as you make your way to the office, but we recommend avoiding it completely. Your self control might be excellent, but who can turn their back on the lethal combination of a well-dressed window and a one-day-only super sale? If necessary, walk those extra blocks to avoid temptation. Your budget and body will be equally thankful.
