The Cannes Film Festival is the ultimate combination of fine filmmaking, high fashion, and celebrity scandal, and the 2014 festival has not disappointed. All the stars are out on parade in Cannes, and we’ve been following all the news from the red carpet and the silver screen.
The Stars
While all of the most revered names of the film industry were in attendance at Cannes, some of our favourite celebrity headliners also made an appearance. Justin Bieber surprise crashed an after party, causing the likes of J-Law and other stars to hit twitter in excitement and surprise. The singer also appeared shirtless on the streets of Cannes, showing off his full sleeve and chest tattoos. To truly cement his name as a Hollywood gossip king, Bieber was seen leaving a Cannes nightclub with Paris Hilton.
Our very own Kylie Minogue was another of the most photographed names at Cannes, appearing in photos with stars from Eva Longoria to Lily Allen, at numerous events during the week.
Meanwhile fashion goddesses such as Cara Delevigne, Marion Cotillard and Jessica Chastain posed together for instagram shots while they passed their days at the festival.
The Films
Cannes film festival audiences are known to be brutal when it comes to disappointing debuts, booing and walking out on poor work. The 2014 Cannes Film Festival had its flops, starting with the very first film of the festival, Grace of Monaco starring Nicole Kidman. Stephen Dalton at the Hollywood Reporter said of the film, ‘Shrek movies deconstruct fairy tale conventions with much more depth and it than this dreary parade of lifeless celebrity waxworks.’
Other films that were received poorly at Cannes included The Captive starring Ryan Reynolds, Betrand Bonello’s biopic Saint Laurent, and neo-noir fantasy thriller Lost River, starring Christina Hendricks. Michel Hazanavicius’ new film The Search also failed to meet high expectations following the directors Oscar-winning The Artist.
But there were also some glittering masterpieces on show at the festival. Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher received largely race reviews for its true story of Olympic gold medalist wrestler Mark Schultz. Marion Cotillard also received great praise for her performance as a factory worker fighting for her job and dignity in Two Days, One Night.
The Fashion
You can’t talk about Cannes without talking about the fashion. The stars put on a true spectacle at the Cannes Film Festival 2014, stepping out onto the red carpet in some of our absolute favourite designers.
Dior was one of the popular choices of the festival, with many opting for the iconic label. Here are some of our favourite Dior looks fromn Jennifer Lawrence, Laetitia Casta, and Natasha Andrews.
But the best dressed star award goes to none other than Blake Lively, who attended multiple events at Cannes Film Festival 2014, as if we needed reminding that she is one of the most stunning women in the world. The blonde bombshell looked spectacular in every look and was a tabloid and high fashion favourite at the festival, which she attended with similarly body-blessed husband Ryan Reynolds.
