Channel Ten’s Offspring has long been the reigning champion of Australian dramas, with a cult like fan base unrivalled by its peers. It is a shock then, to hear rumours that the show may be coming under the knife, and may not proceed with its planned sixth season.
Now in its fifth season, the show seems to have a bigger audience than ever before, with Offspring lovers flooding social media with commentary, joy and despair as the dramas of heroine Nina Proudman’s life unfold every Wednesday night. When Nina’s long-time love (and father to new daughter Zoe) was shockingly killed at the end of season four, fans were vocal in their grief, and returned for season five in droves to see how Nina would fare as a single mum.
Rumours are now circulating that the show is coming to an end and Channel Ten has refused to either confirm or deny the gossip.
However, John Edwards, producer of Offspring, seems positive about the show’s outlook.
‘There is always a chance,’ said Edwards to Confidential. ‘The ratings might go to hell, we never know from day to day what is going to happen.’
Australian drama, A Place to Call Home, was recently axed by Channel 7, which could possibly indicate uncertain times for Aussie fiction.
That said, there is still plenty of season five yet to air, so Offspring fans can rest easy, if only for now.
