What’s not to love about layering? Not only is it perfect for trans-seasonal dressing, but it also extends the life of warm weather garments, and breathes new life into others. We show you how to layer clothes like a pro with six simple tips… By Katie Martlew
1. Less is more
The most important rule in mastering the art of how to layer clothes–is to limit your layers. As a rule, stick to three layers max. Repeat after me: don’t be a player when you layer!
2. Don’t go colour crazy
Layered colours need to compliment each other. Choose too many clashing colours and you’ll be more circus clown than chic. But remember: there’s also a fine line between safe and drab. To lighten up a dull multi-tonal grey mood, inject a pop of colour in the form of a skinny belt or scarf.
3. Pair oversized with super skinny
If you’re wearing several layers up top, keep the lower half long and lean. If you want to wear a chunky knit sweater or cardi, pair it with super skinny jeans, leather jeggings or leggings to elongate those legs.
4. Mix up different fabrics
Adding a contrasting element instantly injects interest to hum-drum multi-tonal hues. A great tip is to layer a summer frock over a long sleeve tee– a firm fashion favourite oflayer lover Alexa Chung, or pair last summer’s denim shorts with stockings and a military jacket or blazer ala miss Olivia Palermo.
5. Beware of the bulk
Always stick to slimming silhouettes when layering. Think sleek fine gauge knits worn closest to the body, reserving chunkier knits for the outside layer. To avoid the curvy girl’s cardinal sin, always cinch in the waist with a belt to create a sexy slender hourglass shape.
6. Layer your jewels
Another way to pull off the layering look is with your jewellery. Think stacking together contrasting bracelets, or mixing up jewelled, multi-strand or neon necklaces to create a stunning statement piece. This is a great way to layer throughout the spring and summer months too. Just remember, if layering with accessories, keep the rest of your look simple.
