Former athlete Julie Rennie was, like many of us, suffering from the sluggishness, lethargy and weight gain that ensues when your metabolism begins to slow down. But rather than accept a daily battle with weight and motivation, she discovered that there’s more to metabolism than fast or slow—rather, by working in time with your metabolism as nature intended, you can improve energy, immunity, digestion and mood, so you can feel great as well as lose weight.
Julie has shared this incredible discovery in her new book, The Metabolic Clock. We spoke with Julie to learn more about this life-changing routine.
RESCU: The book seems part life guide, part diet and exercise, and part cookbook—why was this kind of holistic approach important?
Julie Rennie: What I found for myself is that I often had good intentions, however lacked the motivation or organisation to sustain healthy lifestyle changes.
I divided the book into three sections. The first section gives the readers all the practical advice on how to create a healthy daily routine, what foods to eat and when to speed up your metabolism and how to make moving your body fun.
The next section is really important because it shows you how to create a healthy thinking strategy that will motivate you to achieve your weight loss and wellness goals. It also shows you how to overcome disempowering thought patterns and change bad habits.
The third section is about getting your life organised and setting up a healthy kitchen with recipes and meal plans.
RESCU: What motivated you to write a book about metabolism?
Julie Rennie: In my daily life many people would ask me what I was doing to have so much energy. The Metabolic Clock lifestyle had become so natural to me that I had taken for granted all the positive changes I had made. I wanted to share all the weight loss strategies, motivation strategies, the recipes and the organisational tools that I had developed for my busy life. I am truly inspired to meet people and help them to make positive lifestyle changes that bring more health and happiness into their life.
RESCU: What advice would you give to those who struggle to get to bed early?
Julie Rennie: I used to be a night owl, choosing to go to bed well after midnight. I often woke feeling sluggish and would then have a strong coffee to get me going and I always felt behind in my day. After much soul-searching I realised that I needed to get out of this rut so I decided to follow all six of the energy cycles of The Metabolic Clock. Within one week I started jumping out of bed early every morning ready to have ‘me time’. I discovered that getting to bed well before midnight will re-energise you and give you more quality time to yourself than staying up late at night ever will. Try it for one week and see how it can work for you.
RESCU: Some of the recipes are incredibly tasty—can you really lose weight and feel fantastic, plus eat chocolate or ricotta cake?
Julie Rennie: It’s important to become impassioned about healthy food and learn how to nourish your body. When you nourish your body a sweet treat is then a delight rather than a choice that leaves you feeling guilty. What I also found was that when I have nourishing meals, I don’t crave sweets for energy.
RESCU: How has improving your metabolism changed your life?
Julie Rennie: I feel more balanced. The first thing I noticed was that I began waking up early feeling very alert. It became difficult to sleep in because I was feeling so energised. It is fantastic to nurture myself at the start of the day. I look forward to getting up early and having my ‘me time’. I now enjoy my food more and no longer feel guilty when I eat chocolate. It is now really easy to manage my weight, in fact I do not even think about it anymore.
I now understand that revitalising your digestive system leads to having more energy, a healthier immune system and being in a better mood. Now that I have more energy I feel like exercising and it makes me feel good about myself.
Rescu. Road-Test
Having incorporated The Metabolic Clock into my daily routine for only three weeks, I can honestly say that I’m feeling fantastic. The biggest struggle has been getting to bed by 10pm, but when I do, I’m waking up fresh and ready to go. I’m eating healthier, feeling lighter and am completely re-energised. This has made me want to exercise again and as a result my jeans fit great!
