RESCU: You have been on a whirlwind trip to Australia
Miranda Kerr: I have
RESCU: And how have you been feeling? You look absolutely energised and amazing as always
Miranda Kerr: Thank you. It’s been wonderful. It’s good to always come home to Australia and I feel re energized when I come back here. Even just seeing the harbour I feel it’s just so beautiful and I feel we’re so lucky as Australians.
RESCU: Well, today we had a little bit of the English High Tea setup at Hyde Park — it really turned it on — and every single person in Sydney arrived to see you do your thing as you launch your beautiful collaboration with Royal Albert. Can you tell us a little bit about this collaboration and your first hand in design?
Miranda Kerr: Well it was such a wonderful process for me to be involved in and every step of the way after they approached me I was very hands-on with what my concept was. And they were so open to what it was that I wanted, and they were so receptive to every attention to detail that I wanted and it was really wonderful to work with a brand that was so open to that and let me have full creative control.
Every little detail — the way that the peonies are positioned, to the colour of the butterflies, and the colour palette — it was all my design. It took us a little while and fine china does take a little while but at the end I was just so happy with the results and so pleased that I could show it to all my friends and my family and it’s something that I have in my home and I really treasure.
RESCU: This Is really a passion project for you though, isn’t it? You’re really moving away from things where you’re just the ‘face of’. You’ve really evolved your association and your projects with things that really resonate with you.
Miranda Kerr: Yeah, it’s important for me to do that, and be involved in the creative process because its something that I actually really enjoy and I get a kick out of it and I’m a creative person and…
RESCU: You’re an author, and a songstress…
Miranda Kerr: and a business woman!
RESCU: And a business woman. You’re so many things and, you’re right, that’s kind of the pleasure of being a woman I think; you do have so many facets and I think that is one of the things that has really charmed people about you and has made you so increasingly popular around the world. And I won’t say famous, I’ll say popular, because one of the things that I always hear when people ask me about you is ‘what is she like? She seems so lovely’ and I think it’s because, for a lot of women, for a lot of young women a lot of older women you represent the brave, amazing version of themselves. You don’t alienate people.
Tell me about — all the things that you’re doing — how do you come to choose the projects you’re on?
Miranda Kerr: Well, it’s about working with brands that I really enjoy, brands that I really believe in, brands that I use and evolving my brand as well and doing projects that I’m very passionate about.
And, for me, it was a natural alignment when Royal Albert approached me and I just said, ‘listen this is what I want to do’ and they were so receptive to what I wanted to do and the way I wanted to do it. So, it was a very natural, fluid, beautiful collaboration.
RESCU: Do you love to entertain? Do you do high tea?
Miranda Kerr: I do love to entertain. I love to cook, I love to have tea, and I love to have my friends over. And I feel like it is important to take time to do that. Even just having that moment for yourself when you sit down and have a cup of tea or if you’re feeling a little frustrated say, ‘oh come over let’s have a cup of tea and chat about something’. It’s important to have those moments.
RESCU: The ‘Me time’.
Miranda Kerr: Yeah, the time for you, and then also the time to talk, because I feel like talking is healing and I feel like when you sit with a cup of tea, you can sit and have a chat and it can be healing.
And on the back of every cup you’ll find words…. So this one is joy, that’s the yellow design. Then there’s friendship; and devotion. They’re all named after positive words.
RESCU: Like Kora – you have the positive messages.
Miranda Kerr: Yes! Love, happiness, peace. Because I really believe in that vibration of words and I think words are very powerful and we need to choose our words well.
RESCU: And speaking of words being powerful and empowering people, you have your new book, well it’s about a year old now! Tell me about the creative process for Treasure Yourself and now Empower Yourself…
Miranda Kerr: Well Treasure Yourself was a book that took a little while for me to write, and I would write it while I was on the aeroplane, and obviously it wad edited quite a lot. They also gave me a lot of creative control with the way I wanted the book to be, you know, not only did I wanted my content to be conveyed in my language and my affirmations and whatnot, I also wanted my aesthetic to be throughout the book.
You can see that with the cover and with the butterflies and what not. And this is an extension of that, a little bit with the butterflies and the peonies.
And people might not even realise but in Treasure Yourself like each chapter has a flower, which is about women who have inspired me. I asked them to draw a flower, which represented them because I feel like every woman is beautiful in their own way just like every flower is beautiful, and I don’t think you can say one flower is more beautiful than the other.
So, that was the message for Treasure Yourself.
And also people don’t know but for each chapter I have a heart at the bottom of it in different Chakra colours. It’s just the little touches like that that I don’t even necessarily talk about that gives a personal kind of undertone to what I’m doing.
RESCU: And in Empower Yourself you’ve really taken that to the next level so the messages as well.
Miranda Kerr: Yeah the message is stronger. It’s about empowering women to not be afraid to embracing their own individuality. It’s a wonderful world out there that is so interesting if we can all embrace our uniqueness and build each other up and not push each other down. And I think as women it’s important to embrace that within each other and try and appreciate that.
RESCU: It is. How to you keep your energy?! Because one of the things that I watch is that you’re involved in so many projects, you are doing a beautiful job for Swarovski I was at that event in Australia and what a beautiful brand and again the chemistry feels really right, and then you are also the Global Ambassador now for Clear.
Miranda Kerr: And Reebok.
RESCU: And Reebok! And H&M. But how do you keep, and I guess this is a question a lot of women want to know, so in your case it’s heightened of course because you have so many projects and so many things that you’re doing, but what advice would you give to other women to keep a little bit of their energy to themselves so they are able to regenerate, and be able to still give?
Miranda Kerr: I feel that it’s very important for me to live in the moment and be present wherever I am. So if I’m with you I’m here with you I’m not thinking about the past or the future I’m just really here and that is a way to preserve energy, it’s a way to really enjoy the moment as well, and life is too short not to live like that in my opinion. And that takes a conscious effort to do that.
RESCU: Do you find that mediation helps?
Miranda Kerr: Yeah, I meditate morning and night
Rescu. And do you find that that really helps you to really clear the clutter and be more in the moment?
Miranda Kerr: Yeah and I feel like having that attitude of gratitude and being grateful everyday for the small things: the fact that we can see, that we can hear, that we can walk, and we can taste. Having all of those senses I feel a lot of us have and we take for granted.
But being grateful for having those things and having our health — our health is really our wealth at the end of the day — and being grateful for that is something that will bring you a lot more joy if you choose everyday consciously to be grateful.
RESCU: And do you find that saying no is also an important part of that?
Miranda Kerr: Oh definitely. Having boundaries. And not feeling like you have to necessarily do something, but doing what it is what you really love and enjoy and taking time for yourself is very important, so then you give much more to your family and your friends.
If you take a little bit of time for yourself at the time you may feel like ‘Oh I shouldn’t really be having a massage’ but if you just embrace that and enjoy that massage you’ll give so much more to your family. You’ll be a better mother, you’ll be better at work, and you’ll be able to give so much more. Just implementing those small, little things like even taking those five minutes to have a cup of tea or taking that time to do whatever it is for you as an individual that makes you feel good. Because everyone’s so different, it depends what you enjoy doing. Doing those things really helps you give back.
RESCU: But you look like you’re enjoying things. Your eyes sparkle when you’re interacting with people and I think that that’s one of the differences with you and what everyone loves about you. You do look engaged like I can see you speaking with people. You’re not passing through a crowd; you’re really connecting with people.
Miranda Kerr: It’s important to connect with people. For me it is. That’s what it’s all about, and to hear stories from women that have been positively impacted whetehr it be through my skincare line or through my books.… that really makes it all feel worthwhile.
So it’s good. And this is just another extension of that, of who I am.
RESCU: I’m going to ask you one last question. What’s next? I know that it’s good to be in the present, but let’s talk about the future! What are you working on? Have you got any secret projects on the boil?
Miranda Kerr: I do. Obviously! But I can’t speak to you about them until they’re out!
RESCU: Creative? Or is it another line? Is there another line in the works with Royal Albert? Will there be more collaborations? Because surely this is not the end!
Miranda Kerr: No, this is not the end. That’s for sure This is only the beginning.
RESCU: And I know that Kora has got some really exciting things coming out too
Miranda Kerr: Kora Organics, yes. We have some great products and we’re working on worldwide expansion and getting more products out there so they can hopefully they can be a worldwide household name.
RESCU: and I feel like there’s a movie in you as well!
Miranda Kerr: Possibly! Haha somewhere there in my schedule.
RESCU: Thank you so much it’s always such a pleasure — and fun — to see you. Congratulations on all that you do and thank you for sharing your energy and your light with everyone as well.
Miranda Kerr: No it’s my pleasure thank you.
