With over 700 million votes cast, the red carpet to the Nokia Theatre in LA rolled out, and a whole host of mega-watt stars glammed up, the 14th annual People’s Choice Awards kicked off, and with them the beginning of Hollywood’s awards season for 2014.
Red Carpet
A little more low key than the Oscars, the People’s Choice Awards are a chance for the stars to choose more cocktail-ready frocks.
Sandra Bullock, whose roles in Gravity and The Heat has seen her with a whole host of nominations throughout this year’s awards season, wore a patterned Peter Pilotto frock that suited her to a tee. The prints trend proved popular with stars like Lucy Hale, Heidi Klum, and Melissa Joan Hart.
White was the trend done best on the ruby rug with the gorgeous Jennifer Hudson wearing a skin-tight white Kaufman Fanco dress with Manolo Blahnik heels and stunning Neil Lane jewels. Jessica Alba was also white-hot in a strapless Jason Wu frock as was Beth Behrs who opted for a strapless, floor-length Giulietta dress.
Girls star Allison Williams electric blue David Koma dress was another stand out for the night as was Nina Dobrev’s shimmery, skin tight Jenny Packham number. Both girls have proved themselves as red carpet pros time and time again.
As for the misses, Kat Dennings David Meister Signature Collection patterned dress was a little too grandma’s curtains for us, and did little to show off Kat’s enviable curves. Thankfully the star had a chance to change quicksmart…
The Ceremony
2 Broke Girls’ Kat Dennings slipped out of her not-so-hot frock and into a blue peplum dress that was bang-on for the star, while her co-host and co-star Beth Behrs was out of her Jason Wu and into an adorable sparkly mini dress. Together the funny girls sparkled and shined through the ceremony which began with a sketch which say them in character on the set of their show.
Sandra Bullock was the first to accept an award (we sense this might be a trend for the star this awards season) for Favorite Movie Actress. She went on to sweep the movie category, taking out both the Favorite Comedic Movie Actress, and Dramatic Movie Actress awards as well.
PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS WINNERS LIST
Everyone’s favourite hostess Ellen DeGeneres was awarded for her efforts with the Favorite Daytime TV Host award. As she accepted, the gracious star said, “There’s nothing better than knowing you make people happy.” Too true!
Britney Spears proved she’s put the crazy to bed as she confidently stepped up to the stage like the pop queen we know and love to collect the Best Pop Artist award. The blonde wore a beige Mikael D dress with a black lace overlay — a great choice for the star who needn’t play down her assets.
Britney’s ex Justin Timberlake was another big winner on the night, taking out both Favorite Album (for The 20/20 Experience) and Favorite Male Artist awards.
A pregnant Drew Barrymore took to the stage to present an award for Favorite Comedic Actor to her frequent co-star Adam Sandler. The star joked that Ellen DeGeneres had told her she looked fat backstage, before handing the mic over to Sandler who read a piece of fan mail that opened with the line “Dear Mr Sandler, you do movies by far the goodest for me” and closed, “Signed, Drew Barrymore.”
Jennifer Hudson was awarded the Humanitarian award acknowledging her work through the Julian D King Gift Foundation and gave an emotional speech saying, “It’s one thing to be a celebrity and have so much power — there’s only so much we can have — but it means nothing if we’re not making a difference, helping someone else, trying to change a life.” Cheers to that.
With the Peoples Choice Awards 2014 said and done, our next awards hit is the Golden Globes! Stay tuned for all the goss Monday.
