UPDATE 5 May 2015: We have a name! The Duke and Duchess have announced their daughter’s name as Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. The middle names, of course, are a tribute to her great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth and her late paternal grandmother Princess Diana. Charlotte, the feminine form of Charles, is likely a nod to grandfather Prince Charles. She will be referred to as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.
At around 6am UK time, the Duchess of Cambridge went in to labour in London’s St Mary’s Hospital and, less than three hours later at 8.34am on the 2nd of May 2015, welcomed her baby daughter to the world with Price William, Duke of Cambridge by her side. The little girls weighs 3.7 kilograms (8 lbs 3 oz) and Kensington Palace confirmed, “Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.”
Kate, wearing a gorgeous lemon-yellow Jenny Packham dress, and Prince William emerged from the hospital some time after to smile and wave at the hoards of photographers and royal watchers, but did not speak to the media. The name of the baby is yet to be announced.
Kensington Palace have been providing regular updates via Twitter including a thank you to the staff, “Their Royal Highnesses would like to thank all staff at the hospital for the care and treatment they have all receivied,” and the many royal watchers who were excited to hear the news, “They would also like to thank everyone for their warm wishes.”
It seemed to be a first priority for the pair for Prince George to meet his little sister: Prince William left the hospital to pick up his son from their Kensington Palace home and told media he was feeling, “very happy, thank you very much,” before carrying the now big-brother inside for the first introduction.
The new baby, who was born in the same exclusive Lido Wing that Prince William, Prince Harry, and Prince George were born, has already made history as the first Princess of Cambridge to be born for more than 180 years.
The bub is now fourth in line to the throne following a change of law which means girls can no longer be bumped down the list by a male sibling. When George was born on 22 July 2013, he jumped the line of succession ahead of uncle Prince Harry to become third in line after grandfather Charles and father William. Now Prince Harry will be bumped again to fifth place as will Prince Andrew to sixth.
