With everyone’s favourite tearjerker, The Notebook celebrating its ten-year anniversary, the film’s director has revealed former lovebirds Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams had a fiery relationship on set, and not in the burning love kind of way.
Director Nick Cassavetes revealed to VH1, “They were really not getting along one day on set. Really not. And Ryan came to me, and there’s 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, ‘Nick come here,’”
“And he’s doing a scene with Rachel and he says, ‘Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me?’ I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘I can’t. I can’t do it with her. I’m just not getting anything from this.’”
So how did they manage pull that off (what appears to be) some of the greatest on-screen chemistry of all time?
“We went into a room with a producer; they started screaming and yelling at each other,” the Cassavetes explained. “I walked out. At that point I was smoking cigarettes. I smoked a cigarette and everybody came out like, ‘All right let’s do this.’ And it got better after that, you know? They had it out… I think Ryan respected her for standing up for her character and Rachel was happy to get that out in the open.
“The rest of the film wasn’t smooth sailing, but it was smoother sailing,” he added.
They aren’t the first co-stars to have sent sparks flying on set. Other tumultuous on-set co-stars have included:
Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall – Playing half of one of the most iconic BFF foursomes to ever hit the screen in Sex and the City, the pair’s squabbling halted filming on several occasions. Blame it on the pay packet.
Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio – Romeo and Juliet? Who knew? Let’s just say the dream pair of the 1996 film wouldn’t exactly die for each other. Danes has said Leo was “very immature,” and he supposedly felt she was too uptight.
Blake Lively and America Ferrera –Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants? We think not! It turns out Ugly Betty and the Gossip Girl queen do not get along, with Ferrera having reportedly been caught rolling her eyes at Lively on camera, and during an interview said, “Shows like Gossip Girl kind of condition us to be mean.” Ouch!
Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell – Having just nabbed an Oscar for Ray Foxx was the higher paid of the two on the set of Miami Vice, which was said to “influence his behaviour”…
Nick Nolte and Julia Roberts – Former “Sexiest Man Alive” Nick Nolte and America’s sweetheart Julia Roberts filmed a very convincing I Love Trouble together in 1994, the trouble began when the cameras stopped rolling. Although we don’t know what happened, Nolte has said Roberts is “not a nice person,” and she called him a “disgusting human being.”
