Hollywood’s best and brightest gathered at the Beverly Hilton in California today to celebrate the 70th Annual Golden Globes Award Show.
After all the action on the red carpet the stars entered the hotel ready for the ceremony to begin. With four Australians, Naomi Watts, Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, and Hugh Jackman, up for five awards we were on the edge of our seats waiting for the show to begin.
The fabulous and funny Amy Poehler and Tina Fey played hosts for the night and opened with a hilarious skit that made digs at some seriously famous faces including previous host Ricky Gervais. The pair, who pronounced 2012 a great year for women in film and television, received a standing ovation from the crowd. Watch it below.
Kate Hudson and Bradley Cooper looked stunning as they walked on to the stage to present the Best Supporting Actor award. Christoph Waltz took it out ahead of co-star Leonardo DiCaprio among others for his role in Django Unchained.
Next up, the Best Miniseries or TV Movie award went to Game Change. Soon after it was another hit for Game Change but, unfortunately, a loss for the Aussies as Julianne Moore was announced as the Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV movie, beating out Nicole Kidman.
Salma Hayek and Paul Rudd (who is totally charming by the way) made a cute couple as they announced the next set of awards. Best Actor in a TV Series went to Damian Lewis for Homeland and the hugely popular show took out Best Television Drama as well – no surprises there, Homelandhas been making waves around the world and will surely be an even bigger deal after this!
Jennifer Lopez was next up in a dress that showed off her enviable figure to present Best Original Score award which went to Life of Pi. Another Aussie, Keith Urban, missed out on an award as Best Original Song went to ‘Skyfall’ by Adele and Paul Epworth. New mum Adele accepted her award with a refreshingly short (though still very sweet) acceptance speech.
In an appearance just about no one expected, Bill Clinton took to the stage to introduce Spielberg’s Lincoln and received a standing ovation for it after which Amy Poehler said, “What a special guest! That was Hillary Clinton’s husband!”
Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig took the stage and delivered just what the audience were expecting – jokes galore. The pair presented Jennifer Lawrence, who looked stunning in red Dior Haute Couture, with the Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical for her part in Silver Linings Playbook. The stunned, down-to-earth star said, “I beat Meryl’ (Meryl Streep was nominated for her part in Hope Springs), cleverly making reference to the star’s line in The First Wives Club.
Anne Hathaway, whose stunning all white ensemble was attracting as much attention as her rumoured pregnancy, was awarded Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in Les Miserables and joked,”Thank you for this lovely blunt object that I will use as a weapon against self doubt.”
Two favourites, Amanda Seyfried and Robert Pattinson, were next up presenting the Best Screenplay award which went to Quentin Tarantino for Django Unchained. And Homeland gets its third nod for the night with the Best Actress in a TV Series, Drama going to the very gorgeous and very gracious Claire Danes! The new mum thanks her son slightly strangely saying, “I have to thank my son, for joining me (in utuero) though out the whole process”.
Girls fans rejoiced as the show’s star and creator Lena Dunham took out the Best TV Series Actress in a Comedy or Musical beating hosts and firm favourites Tina Fey and Amy Poelher to the prize. With notes in hand and a million people to thank, the star trembled through her acceptance speech, leaving the audience even more in love with her than they were before. The show was later awarded Best TV Comedy as well. Amazing!
Jodie Foster was honoured with the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award and gave a moving speech that had the entire audience in tears and the twitterati calling it the best speech ever. Watch it below.
Halle Berry is the next presenter and she awards Ben Affleck with the Best Director award for Argo. In his acceptance speech, Affleck sweetly thanks wife Jennifer Garner saying, “I love you, I adore you so much, you’re the reason I’m standing here.” Awwww.
Later Argo was awarded Best Motion Picture, Drama so Ben must be feeling the love.
And our Hugh Jackman has won Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for his performance in Les Misérables! There’s another ‘awww’ moment as he thanks wife Deborah Lee Furness and refers to her as the most amazing wife in the world. Immediately following, Les Misérables gets yet another nod as Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.
At the end of the awards ceremony, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey bid the audience goodnight by saying, “we’re going home with Jodie Foster”.
