Overindulging in rich, hearty comfort foods during winter can leave many feeling sluggish. So when spring arrives, most of us are eager to embrace better health and nutritious food.
The good news is for a better diet you don’t have to sacrifice on social outings; you simply need to be savvy about what you choose to eat and when; and it all starts from breakfast, suggests celebrity food personality and ambassador for The Coffee Club, Justine Schofield.

“Catching up with friends and family over all-day breakfast is an integral part of the Australian culture, and we do it better than anywhere else in the world,” Justine says.
“They say breakfast is the most important meal, and it’s the perfect opportunity to start your day on the right food nutrition-wise. For the best start to the day, simply go green; opt for nourishing food packed full of seasonal greens such as peas, herbs, spinach and asparagus which are in plentiful supply this time of year.”
So if you want to sleep in, socialise over brunch and still kick-start your spring health regime, consider these five tips to eating your way to better health:
Eat seasonal
Green peas, fresh herbs, spinach and asparagus are in abundance this time of year, and they’re going to be hot on breakfast menus everywhere. Take advantage of this and stock up on your daily greens while you enjoy your classic bacon and eggs.
Don’t deprive yourself
Eat wholesome, nourishing food. It’s absolutely fine to have bread with your meal – just ensure you’re adding your spring veggies to the mix! Enjoy a cheesy crepe packed full of parsley or a big breakfast with ample sides of fresh avocado, spinach and asparagus. It really is about everything in moderation and making fresh, seasonal produce the hero of the dish, ensuring you’re getting your daily fibre intake too!
Take advantage of the weather
Enjoy your catch up over brunch, and then grab a smoothie or coffee-to-go so you can extend your chat-time with a walk in the sunshine. If you’re an early-riser, you can work up an appetite with a pre-breakfast work-out.
Get back to basics
You won’t see anything too “showy” on menus this spring, as many cafes are starting to ditch the dishes that require a dictionary. “And that’s a good thing as it means we’re eating wholesome, natural food and we know exactly what we are consuming,” adds Schofield
