In the mid of award season, we have seen many a red carpet of late… But the Grammys are always that little bit different, with pop stars showcasing their on-stage talents into red carpet looks – Lets just say, we are used to this red carpet being a little out there.
Recently though, we have seen a shift from the outrageous, costume-like looks and seeing our pop stars really refine their look – Is everyone trying to restore their image?
Lady Gaga has definitely won that award of late. That was until this Grammys Red Carpet, where she showcased a blue eye shadow look with red hair – at least someone is showing a little on-stage glamour.
Here are my Top 3 Beauty looks of the night:
Adele – Modern Classic
Adele has been the talk of the town of late and is making a strong comeback on the music scene. I don’t think anyone has not sung along to, Hello? Or is that just me…
Known for her always classic take on beauty with polished skin, winged liner and big lashes, Adele served up a modern take on things tonight.
WHY: The new modern textured bob makes this look modern, fresh and slightly more relaxed than previous Adele looks. It also is a great colour, adding a sexy playfulness to the new mum.
As always, makeup is polished and true to the Adele brand, showcasing eyes as a feature with fresh lip and cheek to add balance.
How: Once skin is complete, we then add contour – this means adding matte shade tones to areas we want to lift and recede. Adele is a fan of this under her cheekbone for more definition, and in the eye sockets for lifting.
For extra eye wow, Adele loves a liquid style winged liner as this gives thickness to her lashes, and an outer lift of the eye.
Note: It is important to trace out where the outer wing of your eyeliner will finish – Do this when the eye is open for perfect placement, as liner can dip if applied only closed.
Finish with lots of Mascara and you can achieve the Adele eye.
Ellie Goulding – Fresh and Playful
Ellie Goulding hasn’t really ever wowed me on red carpets, but tonight was different. I felt her look was pretty, polished, fresh and playful all in one. I liked how wearable her look is for all different occasions, plus the hair is so on trend, It’s a little relaxed, but done enough to suit a red carpet – sometimes relaxed is the way to go.
WHY: The red carpet looks in today’s world are very tame compared to say 5-10 years ago. Natural beauty, showing fresh skin, defined eyes and glow is the key to success and this look ticks all of those boxes for me.
I love the subtle contouring making highlighter above the cheekbones and the central area, with soft blush being a feature.
HOW: Always apply highlighter before shade. We can sometimes over shade, which can change the look, making it look dark and muddy and losing the freshness we set out for.
Highlighting alone can bring forward the areas where it is applied, reflecting light and lifting areas of the face. By doing this first, you see results, so then you can use less shade. Adding blush only to the apple of the cheeks is the quickest way to create a fresh lift to the face.
Nicole Trunfio – Boutique Chic
I must say this Grammys (minus the fact we were missing the usual super pop stars of Katy Perry, Beyonce and Rhianna) was a little under whelming with beauty… Very similar looks with lots of nude contoured looks and only a few venturing out with lip colours.
I love this look on Aussie Nicole Trunfio. It’s super polished and the lip colour is divine with the overall tones to complete the look.
WHY: Imagine this look, as we know it now with a nude lip? It wouldn’t have had the WOW factor. It’s hard to imagine the tones all working without this touch of rich plum – it just works.
Silver can be a hard colour when choosing lips. The look either needs a statement shade or nude, and Nicole rocked it with this chic plum.
Hair pulled back would have been too severe and heavy eyes would have been over-kill – this type of look needs balance. A simple 1-2 key focus points and that is it.
HOW: When wearing a plum lip (or any statement lip) it is not only a focus on the face, but it is deep and rich too, giving the look a whole other level of chic.
Seeing the lip is the hero, everything else becomes the accessory to the lip. The eyes slightly winged, but without too much depth. The soft shaded contouring to give the face a sculpted yet not severe outlook – it all just works.
A lip like this needs moisture, but not overly shiny to where it can wear away.
Apply with your fingertip to press pigment in, acting as a stain, then apply lip liner over lip edge for the perfect pout.
Note: If your lips are on the smaller side, apply a lighter shade in the centre to create light reflection.
