It was the instant restaurant that viewers and contestants had been waiting for. The seasons ‘villains’ Kelly Ramsay and Chloe James (WA) were put on the line, forced to prove that their talent stands up to the weeks of torturous bragging that they have put their peers through. The episode pulled a whopping 2 million viewers as everyone turned on their sets to see whether they were all talent, or all talk.
Chloe and Kelly My Kitchen Rules villains have received much backlash as recent episodes have gone to air. The Internet has been flooded with critical memes about the pair and their famous bragging about having visited 42 countries and dined at Michelin star restaurants.
‘The imagery on Instagram is really horrible,’ Kelly said. ‘My mum has been crying about it a lot. People have no idea that we’re real people, we’ve been made the villains of the series and people have said horrible things about us.’
The girls were the final team to face the at home instant restaurant challenge, after sitting back and criticising the other five teams’ cooking for being overly simplistic. Unfortunately (and much to viewers’ delight) their Gatsby-inspired restaurant ‘Nouveau’ failed to live up to the hype.
‘I think our technical ability is higher than a lot of the teams,’ said Kelly as they prepared the entrée, a trio of cheeses that was ultimately panned by the judges.
‘If you’re going to serve a trio of dishes, they need to be able to stand,’ said judge Pete Evans. ‘None of these ticked that box for me. In a word, mediocre.’ Both judges and tweeting audience members were angered by the girls use of store bought cheese, which could be considered cheating.
The main course was a success in the eyes of the judges, the Paesants’ Paella with Rabbit and Snails was named ‘sensational’ by Pete Evans. The contestants were not so easy to please, disinclined to try rabbit or snails, and even more so to award high points to the pair that they have listened to boasting and bragging for five previous dinners.
Dessert was the true disaster of the night, lead by self-proclaimed dessert queen Chloe. The Millefeuille with Passion Fruit Custard and Lime Tequila Curd was make from store-bought puff pastry (another no no) and was claimed to taste like cardboard by judge Manu Feidel.
The girls were awarded a dismal 18 out of 50 by their fellow contestants, and a mediocre 31 by the judges. With a total score of 49, they just escaped elimination, with ACT’s Andre and Emilia being sent home. With the pair surviving to cook another day, we’ll be sure to see more of their uber-confident antics.
