Unless you’ve been living under a out-of-wifi range rock, you’ve probably had your social media feed inundated with an influx of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week related posts all week. Which, of course, we’re not complaining about. There’s nothing better than a good scroll through Instagram for inspiration, especially with so many new season trends to choose from.
There’s the clothes, the accessories and those to-die-for (some so high, you literally could!) heels which have us green with envy, but the one thing you can recreate at home without the designer pricetag are Fashion Week hairstyles.
From three of Australia’s leading hair powerhouses, we show you how to take your tresses from street style to catwalk cool four ways:
TREND 1: UNDONE GLAMOUR
Anchored by an effortless but confident mood, Redken Hair Director Philip Barwick created loose, textured waves for the WATSON X WATSON Show on Day 2 at MBFWA 2015. “The loose textured waves I created for the WATSON X WATSON Show exuded effortless confidence,” Barwick said.
CREATE THE LOOK
- On dry hair, spray PILLOW PROOF Blow Dry Express Primer
- Apply ROOTFUL 06 Root Lifting Spray liberally, before layering with GUTS 10 Volume Spray Foam for an added boost of volume directly to the roots.
- Use your fingers to lightly blow dry and toss the hair, enabling it to maintain its natural movement.
- Starting at the ends and working up, brush the hair with a padded styling brush.
- Divide hair into three sections and curl the mid-lengths around the barrel keeping the last two inches straight. Curl the front side sections away from the face and alternate the direction of the curls on the back section.
- Run your fingers through to separate and create loose, natural-looking waves.
- Finish with WIND BLOWN 05 Dry Finishing Spray to create weightless volume and an airy textured, windswept effect.

TREND 2: BRAIDED BEAUTY
Steven Khalil was pleased to work with leading salon-professional brand Goldwell for his show. “I’m very excited to be working with Sharon Blain and the team from Goldwell on my Couture Collection Hair look – it’s going to be romantic but modern and clean,” he said before the show. “A chic centre part trailing into a braid with soft side sweeps and a figure 8 fishtail plaited bun at the nape of the neck finishes off the look.”
CREATE THE LOOK
- Spray the hair with StyleSign Hot Form styling lotion and directionally blow dry the hair with a paddle brush from a centre pony tail, towards the nape to create a smooth finish.
- Make a parting in line with the top of the ear from ear to ear, dividing the hair into two sections. Run StyleSign Diamond Gloss through the hair for a high shine finish.
- Work a three strand scalp braid in a 5cm panel down the centre of the forehead down to the back at the nape. Secure with a small band to hold. This can be lightly roughed for texture, but the braid should be tight.
- Direct the sides softly back on both sides and secure at the nape. A light back combing on the sides with finer hair will help give body.
- Divide the pony in two sections and work a three-strand braid to the end, band to hold.
- Make a loop out to the sides and secure the ends at centre to hold.
- Repeat on other side, pin well and spray with StyleSign Magic Finish to hold.

TREND 3: CLEAN-BUT-FUN BUN
At Toni Maticevski this year we saw slicked hair tied in buns for minimum fuss and maximum impact styled by ghd. Jayne Wild, ghd Hair Director said “For the hair look this year we wanted to keep it clean and minimalistic and really let the clothes do the talking.” Maticevski was delighted with the no-nonsense up-do: “We wanted the look to feel sleek but to also play on the idea of bringing in elements of technical moulding and working with artificial fiber against a natural beauty. Hence the bun encased latex layers which twists and contorts against the finely polished hair.”
CREATE THE LOOK
- Prep dry hair with a light mist of ghd heat protect spray and smooth in using a ghd natural bristle radial brush.
- Apply a small amount of ghd total volume foam around the hairline and dry in using ghd aura professional hairdryer and a ghd natural bristle radial brush, directing towards the crown of the head.
- Gather hair into a ponytail using a ghd oval dressing brush and secure just below the crown of the head using a hair elastic twist the ponytail, twirling it back into itself and secure with bobby pins.
- Combine ghd total volume foam with a squirt of ghd smooth & finish serum and apply it to the hairline and blend into the rest of the hair using finger tips.
- Using ghd aura professional hairdryer, directly dry the roots back.
- Secure a latex piece on top of the twist and tie in with an elastic.
- Finish with a final spray of ghd final fix hairspray to set the look.

TREND 4: BEACHY WAVES WITH A TWIST
Slicked back and seaside was what Ten Pieces was all about this Fashion Week. Looks were spun, twisted and curled with the Cloud 9 Standard Wand for loose, just-out-of-the-surf natural curls. This undone but still polished look offset the collection and its waterfront surroundings, with the final touch being a good shake of the head upside-down to achieve volume and texture.
CREATE THE LOOK
- Use the standard Wand to curl and create structure in the layers.
- Spray hair with a shine spray to give a wet look.
- Brush out the hair with a dressing brush
- Twist hair back and pin.
- Release the hair and shake through at the last minute.
