The Three Skin Wishes Series is sponsored by philosophy’s renewed hope in a jar
If re-energized and glowing is your skin wish, I’m about to make it come true. And fast.
Natural, glow, fresh and healthy: all these words are thrown around daily by my clients and are things most women are striving for with their makeup, especially when it comes to their complexion.
Women tend to go straight to their makeup bag when they are feeling a little dull or fatigued. I get it; it’s instant, it covers and adding colour can help us look fresh fast. But, when going straight to the makeup bag, we are simply masking the problem and never actually achieving the healthy glow we want.
I may be a makeup artist, but if any of my clients need a little boost, a re-energized healthy glow, makeup is not my first go-to: it’s skincare!
I need to hydrate, smooth, plump and add glow back to skin before anything else as, otherwise, I am just applying product over product, layer over layer and the look becomes mask-like rather than natural and fresh.
MB PRO TIP;
When tired and fatigued, masking the concern with makeup can make you look worse. This is because your inner glow under the makeup is dead and flat – if you fix this before applying makeup, you will then use less product on top, creating a healthy glow every time!
Step One: Prep the Skin
Prep and prime is such a big part of my makeup application routine.
It guarantees the makeup I apply sits like a second skin to give better longevity as I am not layering as much product to ‘mask’ concerns which could risk creasing and wear and tear later in the day.
I always look for a moisturizer that is lightweight and ultra hydrating so it will absorb into the skin quickly – especially in the morning when we are all time poor – and one that can create a glow to the skin.
Having this base will ensure makeup doesn’t sit not on top of your skin, which can be more noticeable than natural. Choosing a moisturiser that illuminates will let light shine through a foundation to make it appear sheerer than it really is so you can say hello to a natural, re-energised glow.
Rescu. Recommends: philosophy’s renewed hope in a jar
This breakthrough moisturiser is so effective that 81% of women immediately saw glowing skin. If your wish is a re-energized healthy glow and colour, consider it renewed hope in a jar’s command. With Asian fruit extract to increase micro-circulation and bring a natural healthy color to the skin, prickly pear flower extract to stimulate the skin enzymes to enhance natural luminosity, and micro-optics to help diffuse light at the surface for a soft-focus effect: this is basically an Instagram filter in a jar and your best first step to re-energised skin.
Step Two: Foundation and concealer
Gone are the days of foundation being applied in the same thickness all over the face, looking like a mask!
MB PRO TIP;
You should be applying your chosen foundation in a sweeping application to create a sheer veil, then pin-pointing problem areas with more coverage – usually, nose, chin, centre of the face – to create a very balanced application and allow a real-skin effect to your look.
The use of concealer has risen of late. One part of me loves it, but the other does not.
The rise of the selfie generation has made us all obsessed with covering up and contouring, but this doesn’t mean we have to pack on products to appear perfect with the right filter. NOTE TO SELF – people are going to see you without that filter too…
Concealer for me is only used for whatever the foundation cannot cover. Not as an all over cover up — it should be used minimally and pressed into the skin.
MB PRO TIP;
For under eyes, I use two shades.
One a little deeper than the skin tone with a yellow-to-orange base to counteract the blue/bruised tone of a dark circle and, the other, a shade lighter than the skin tone to lift and brighten the under eye area for a very re-energized look – that alone can do wonders first thing in the morning.
Step Three: Pop points
Now that our skin is glowing from within with the correct prep and prime, we can re-energise further with pop points on the face – eyes, cheeks, lips…
This means taking theme from our fresh skin, we need to add a little colour and definition to complete our healthy glow look. A re-energized look doesn’t need too much product — just great skin, foundation and a little colour to lift.
Try these pop points:
– Add a bronzer for a little shape under the cheekbone and in the eye sockets.
– A pop lip, one that will lift your skin tone – Peach, pink, warm red.
– Using the lipstick as a cream blush, dab a small amount on the apple of the cheek for added plump.
– Add Mascara to your lashes to contrast against the bronzer shade and open the eye.
– Using a brow powder or taupe eye shadow, fill in brows for added definition and to frame and lift!
Your skin wish fulfilled
Looking re-energized and healthy all comes down to the skin you have under the makeup, it really is the area that tells your personal makeup story…
Prep and prime is where I would spend more time, to then use fewer products on the surface.
And get back to basics with pop points — it works every time!
