Molly Meldrum – Australia’s pop music critic, record producer, journalist and TV icon – encountered a serious fall last month while getting out of a taxi at a hotel in Bangkok.
The 73-year-old’s health has only gotten worse since and his condition is thought to be more serious than initially thought, having suffered four cracked ribs and dislocating his shoulder.

Upon first diagnosis when taken to Bangkok’s BNH hospital, Meldrum was taken into emergency surgery to repair his crushed spine. He reported “they said If i don’t do it, it could dislodge the vertebrae and paralyse both legs”
An MRI showed that Meldrum has displaced a vertebrae in his spine, only 6 millimeters away from being paralysed from his waist down. The TV icon was extremely lucky to have avoided having serious spinal surgery.
Meldrum spent his 73rd birthday surrounded by family and friends in Bangkok, but returned to hospital yesterday having suffered intense nerve shooting pains in his right arm.
Still located in Bangkok and being closely monitored by the intensive care unit, Molly’s brother has flown over to be with him, reporting his condition to be “a lot more serious” than first diagnosed.
The heavily-promoted new miniseries Molly, starring Samuel Johnson as Molly Meldrum himself, will debut this Sunday evening on Channel 7.
