Today, with the introduction of high definition television and digital photography, you can no longer rely on blown out lighting to blast this mask away. The clearer pictures are much less forgiving. It does take some convincing to rid Hollywood starlets from the security blanket of their foundations, especially when they see I don’t even have liquid foundation in my kit. They often ask what kind of foundation I’m going to use, and I say “I’m not”, but once they see the finished result, they never go back.
How the stars make their skin glow with less make-up:
The first and most important step to creating a flawless complexion without a heavy base is preparation of the skin. I use a cream cleanser to lightly massage the face, the massage stimulates blood flow to the skin and facial muscles, which makes the face look more alive and vibrant. Next, I use a cleanser to remove any dirt and oil and spray Evian water lightly over the face and remove the cleanser firmly with a tissue to ensure I remove all the impurities.
Then I lightly moisturise and blot with blotting papers or tissue to remove any product which wasn’t absorbed, as a greasy end result would require excessive powdering.
Secondly, start with the eyes. When a girl looks at herself with no make-up on, she feels naked and immediately grabs the foundation to hide behind. If you start with the eyes, you’ll often find you’ll require less concealing as the attention to the imperfections is drawn away by the strength of the eyes.
Start by spot concealing the imperfections which stand out the most. I prefer to use a foundation compact like the one from Jouer (it also contains anti ageing properties). The ingredients which make your foundation a liquid and enable you to move your foundation out of the bottle, also make it move around your face. Packing on powder stops that from happening.
More heavily pigmented products require less to get the same coverage. If there are some larger areas which need to be evened out, I’ll often mix a small amount of concealer with a little light eye cream and lightly stipple it into the area with a sponge or foundation brush.
To avoid excessive powdering, I’ll always use an anti shine cream like the one from Smashbox over the T-zone, leaving the cheek bones to show their natural glow. I also try, where possible, to use cream blushes and darker foundation compact tones to create contouring and bronzing.
Finally if further powdering is required, I use a very light translucent powder, Laura Mercier is hands down the best. However, I use a fan brush in place of the traditional powder brush as it applies much less of the product.
