Looking back at the runways of RAFW we noticed every type of ponytail you could imagine and have found ourselves with a new perspective on the do that was once reserved for a quick run to the shops. No longer is the ponytail just about convenience, RAFW showed us how adding a bit of texture and a lot of attitude can turn our old favourite school ‘do, into a grown-up and chic style.
We’ve turned to the experts for advice on recreating threeexcellent pony tails.
The New Beehive at Gary Bigeni
Redken Hair Director Daren Borthwick created a modern take on the beehive at the Gary Bigeni show. He said, “this season, Gary has fashioned his collection with clean sillouettes, bold colours and soft, feminine fabrics. In order to stay in line with this theme, we created a 1960s inspired exaggerated shape, but rather than a beehive, we created a low ponytail at the back for that modern, spunky edge.”
Get the Look:
- Apply a lightweight texture building product to the roots of towel-dried hair
- Create a large fringe with a part on the left side and blow dry forward
- Blow dry remaining hair back and add volume near the roots with your fingertips. If the hair is looking flat, spray some texturiser into the hair
- Form a low ponytail ensuring the fringe covers part of the ears and secure with a hair elastic
- Finally, mist the hair with a mild-hold hairspray to complete the look.

A Sleek Spanish Sweep at Manning Cartell
We loved the sleek centre part and long. low ponies on show at Manning Cartell. ghd hair director Alan White created the look with traditional Spanish dancers in mind and, of course, used a ghd styler to create a dead straight lock of hair.
Get the Look:
- Prep hair using mousse, making sure to evenly distribute the product through to the ends
- Blow dry hair and add lots of root list with a boar bristle round brush
- Centre part the hair right down the middle and add some smooth and shine with ghd Obedience Cream to the top layer of the hair
- Brush hair into a clean low ponytail about half an inch above the nape of the neck and secure with a hair elastic
- Take a comb and work it from the part line down to the top of the ear so that the hairline is not visible when tucked behind the ears
- Wrap a small section of hair around the base and then add ornaments
- Tease volume into the ponytail and then smooth the surface and finish with hairspray

The Pony with an Edge at Ginger & Smart
The Ginger & Smart models wore a ponytail that was a bit edgier and one we can definitely see a lot of girls rocking by night. Kenneth Stoddart of Moroccanoil created the modern look that reflected the opposing combination of masculine and feminine.
Get the look:
- First Moroccanoil Treatment Oil was applied to hair from the mid-lengths to ends to strengthen and condition hair prior to styling
- Use hairspray on dry hair, concentrating on the roots and then brush smooth from roots to ends with a paddle-brush
- Take a top section of hair and then divide from the front temple, in a horseshoe shape to the crown
- Section this top piece out of the way and back, teased underneath to create padding for the pins to be clipped to
- Use styling cream and spray to create a wet look in the hair and brush band horizontally behind the ear on both sides of the head
- Secure the hair with bobby pins in the teased padding under the dry panel of hair at the band of the end
- Take sections from the front of the head and lightly teased to fill in the curve, creating a square shape
