As one of the most influential characters of our time so eloquently put it: “Men, I may not know – but shoes? Shoes, I know.” As HBO’s resident queen of footwear, Carrie Bradshaw’s Manolo addiction brought to the masses the unequivocal rush a fabulous new pair of heels can bring. So who are we to argue? Time to make like SJP and hit the pavement – read on for our round-up of Spring’s latest and greatest.
ANKLE GRAZING
Things are looking up on the footwear front – further up your leg, that is. We’ve moved on from the heel adornment of last season and the spotlight is firmly on the ankle – think tassels a la Aquazurra, clever detachable oversize satin straps at Attico or mile-long leather laces at Isabel Marant. Perfect back with summer’s shorter hemlines.

Sol Sana Miro flats, $202.56, shopbop.com.
BARELY THERE
Whilst we love a little high octane, more-is-more attitude on the accessory front, sometimes a little goes a long way. Meet the cheekily dubbed ‘nothing shoe’, championed by the likes of Rosie Huntingdon-Whiteley, Chrissy Teigen and the minimalist doyenne herself Victoria Beckham – a finer-than-fine strappy with nothing more to say other than “I’m chic AF.”
Tony Bianco ‘Char’ heels, $179.97, tonybianco.com.au
The Mode Collective “Barely There’ sandal, $259, themodecollective.com.
Stuart Weitzman ‘Nudist’ metallic heels, $553.47, net-a-porter.com.
THE (SEX) KITTEN SLINGBACK
The runway is full of surprises – none more than the kitten-heel slingback, last spotted in a corporate boardroom in 1995. Trust Dior and Prada to rework this style with a twist, adding a whole lotta sex appeal to a silhouette that, let’s face it, had seen better days. Channel a gamine Audrey Hepburn and wear it with a cropped trouser to the office.

HI-VIS (BOLD COLOUR)
If it’s not burning your retina’s ever so slightly, then it’s not bright enough. Turn up the volume in hot-to-trot red, cobalts, pinks and berry tones – back with an all-white ensemble you’ll be unmissable. Note: shades essential.
Gucci patent leather teal sandals, $785, gucci.com.
Christian Louboutin Decoltish 100mm suede pumps, $683, matchesfashion.com.

Topshop buckle ballerina flats, approx. $66.76, topshop.com.
TO THE POINT
Balenciaga made a case for razor-sharp extended points this season – so naturally, we’re kicking our almond toes to the curb in favour of anything and everything angular. Think ‘Bladerunner’, tailored silhouettes, a woman on the move – you’ll set a fast pace in a pair of these bad boys.
Public Desire Paparazzi Hoop Heeled Ankle Boots, $80, asos.com.
Tony Bianco ‘Davis’ boots, $219.95, tonybianco.com.au.
Witchery ‘Cleo’ flats, $139.95, witchery.com.au
Balenciaga ‘Knife’ mules, $850, harrods.com.
PROVENÇAL
Who doesn’t want to elicit a little Jane Birkin circa late sixties for summer? That easy, breezy, je nai sais quoi approach is more than relevant to an Australian summer wardrobe – hence why the espadrille is making such a strong comeback this season. Throw them on with a printed sundress and a basket bag and you might as well be on the Riviera with Serge.
Sportsgirl ‘Homer’ espadrilles, $49.95, sportsgirl.com.au.
CASTAÑER Kitty Tie espadrille, $125, farfetch.com.
Chloe ‘Lauren’ espadrille wedges, $620, farfetch.com.
Soludos metallic leather espadrilles, $144.95, soludos.com.
THE SLIPPER
An offset from our obsession with pyjama dressing, the slipper rose to the forefront post our obsession with wanting to look undone, but done. Effortless, with effort. Like, just rolled out of bed in a matching silk-set but chic. However nonsensical it sounds, trust us – wearing your slippers outside of the house isn’t just to grab the papers of a morning if they’re as fabulous as the below. Wear it with denim, to the office in your tailoring, with a sundress – they may fall under loungewear but they’re anything but lazy.
Le Monde Beryl venetian backless slippers, $382, matchesfashion.com
Tabitha Simmons ‘Masha’ velvet slippers, $568.22, net-a-porter.com.
River Island navy backless slippers, $84, riverisland.com.
BEDAZZLED
Lights, camera, action! A jazzy, Josephine Baker-style shoe made for the dancefloor is as essential to summer as a bikini and a cocktail – bonus points if you’re sporting a mixed media concoction of metallics and embellishment. Ring-a-ding-ding indeed.
Witchery ‘Mia’ heels, $179.95, witchery.com.au.
Nicolas Kirkwood ‘Penelope’ embellished sandals, $826.52, net-a-porter.com.
Schutz ‘Eloise’ city sandals, $227.88, shopbop.com.
