For some sun lovers, summer holiday accessories go beyond the flippers and floppy hat. Hair styling tools are essential for 24/7 style. Here, super celebrity stylist, Renya Xydis talks exclusively to Rescu. about must-haves’ and How To’s of summer hair styling.
“This summer is all about being playful with your hair,” says Renya Xydis, stylist to Cate Blanchet, Nicole Kidman and Delta Goodrem. “Don’t be afraid to play with texture, braids, volume and sea salt sprays!”
THE HAIR HOT LIST
Which easy breezy styles are best when you’re heading to the beach (and quite possibly the pool bar) this summer?
Texturizing: For that effortless beach look your hair doesn’t always have to be freshly washed, insists Renya. “Wait one to two days before applying a texturizing product and you’ll find the grittiness of your hair will help hold a perfect undone beach wave.”
Layering: Speak with your stylist about adding some layers into your hair this summer, Renya advises. When drying your hair naturally, this will help enhance your natural texture and shape whilst also giving the illusion of thicker hair, which is a big trend.
Hydrating: “During summer it is important to keep you hair healthy and hydrated,” Renya says, suggesting the application of a moisturizing treatment once a week, especially if you have long or coloured hair. “This will keep you hair looking healthy and strong when styling it this summer,” she says.
THE STYLING TOOL EDIT
Which three tools should you take on a deserted island destination?
Want: Curling wand
Why: To create tousled, sexy beach vibe.
Want: Salt styling spray
Why: To creature texture, volume and movement for an effortless summer do.
Want: Hairspray
Why: It’s a must with so many summer events carrying on from the afternoon through to the evening.
FUTURE TOOL TRENDS
There is trend towards the ‘automatic’ technology, says Renya. Combined with advanced research into what is best for the health of your hair, expect to see hair tools that work on a ‘contactless’ theory. “With new technology we will find hot tools, infusing their plates with more beneficial minerals to leave your hair soft, shiny and less damaged,” Renya forecasts. “We have already started to see tools without on/off buttons and with very fast heating capabilities but this will become more mainstream.”
365 HAIR ESSENTIALS
When the last wave has licked at your toes, and the sand is finally cleaned out of your slides, what are the essential hair tools you should maintain all year around for maximum hair love?
Hair Curling Wand: “The Cloud Nine Waving Wand is a great multipurpose tool,” explains Renya. “It can help tame flyways whilst smoothing the hair and can also be run through the hair to help manage excess volume. This tool is a great multi-tasking essential that can be used everyday to style hair for every occasion.“
Hair Straightening Tool: These too are extremely versatile, notes Renya. “You can keep it in your gym bag, take it traveling and it’s perfect for tiding up your fringe or any flyways around your face. In one way or another, I use this tool almost every time I am on a shoot!” she says.
HAIR STYLING TOOLS
The #1 Don’t:
“Most people damage their hair using hot tools without a heat protectant spray and by having the temperature too high for their hair type,” Renya cautions. “Generally if you can see steam coming from your hair then the temperature is too hot!” she says. “This will strip the moisture from your hair and the style won’t last long, leaving your hair frizzy, damaged and dry.”
The #1 Do:
Prepare your hair using the right products, urges Renya. “This will enhance the style you are trying to achieve and will not only make it easier to style when in a rush, but will also help you hair hold the style for longer.”
