The red carpet of all red carpets is here – It’s Oscar’s day and boy did the Hollywood stars put on a show.
Lots of colour with textured and embellished gowns, mixed with glowing skin, hazy eyes and unstructured hair ruled the night and like many of red carpets of late, wearable, modern Hollywood beauty is so on trend.
It’s very refreshing to see so many Hollywood women embracing more natural beauty – lash, lip and brow being pop points and an accessory to beautifully polished and glowing skin. Eye makeup is smoothly applied and blended, showing different levels of depth, rather than separate, more apparent lines, that can sometimes make eyes even smaller if not careful.
The Oscars is the one red carpet where you want to step it up a notch and almost feel princess like. But, with modern twists to that feeling – unstructured loose movement, ponytails and up do’s that are wearable are ruling this years looks in hair. Easy to re-create and great style inspo for our own.. well, maybe not quite as glamorous as the occasions we have in our own lives.
While it was not an easy task this year, here are my Top 3 Beauty Looks;
Margot Robbie – Cool Chic
Margot is no stranger to my Top 3 Beauty looks in past years – its always polished yet effortless and this Aussie has a cool edge to all her red carpet looks, who wouldn’t want to re-create this look?
WHY: Taking the Oscars Gold to reality, Margot’s tones are so complimentary to her skin and hair, but enough pop with lip and eyes to photograph well – All with an effortless approach.
Margot’s hair in some ways has dressed down her gold gown, but it resembles the modern woman and loose movement is what we are all wanting to achieve in hair trends, Margot, you rocked it!
HOW: No one does nude skin and natural beauty like Margot Robbie… Ok, yes. She is blessed with amazing skin, but everything is seamless, with no signs of contouring, even though its there.
It’s all in your prep. Apply a skin illuminator under foundation, so that when its applied, it appears sheerer, fresh and natural, with light reflecting through the foundation pigment.
Using a large wave wand, twist hair in bigger sections and not as tight to create a very relaxed feel. Dry wax is my new favourite product to apply to waves. It creates texture, but isn’t sticky like hairspray.
Jennifer Garner – Classic
There is always room for classic Hollywood style on a red carpet like the Oscars, and Jennifer has nailed it.
The modern princess style up-do, showing off those gorgeous earrings to the softly smudged winged smokey eye and nude lip – simply stunning.
WHY: With the hair off and away from the face, it places all the focus on the eyes. It is so important not to over-do the eyes, but still create definition. This means creating depth at the lash line, with a soft fade up into the eye socket so the eyes are lifted, yet defined.
HOW: Use a kohl pencil to line the lower and especially the upper lash line, next use a brush to smudge and blend the product up and into the eye area – it works every time. Jennifer has elongated her eyes outward slightly by smudging the pencil slightly upwards past the outer eye area – this gives great lift and looks very elegant.
Jennifer Lawrence – It Girl
Jennifer Lawrence is always a hot favourite on Red Carpets and being Hollywoods ‘It Girl’, she once again has wowed with this beauty look.
Cool, edgy, but still polished – just how a modern red carpet should be!
WHY: The new hair is a big feature for Jennifer at this years Oscar’s!
The cut and colour really gives a modern edge to her red carpet overall look.
Because of Jennifer’s pale skin, platinum hair and flesh tones throughout her gown, warmth was important on the face to not look washed out.
Using a bronzer is a great base tone to warm up a smokey eye, which can sometimes go grey on pale skin.
HOW: Multi-task your bronzer. The same bronzer you use on your face for contour and shape (matte), use this tone as a base colour across the eyelid and into the socket area. Once applied, with a bigger blending brush, blend this bronze tone up into the brow area so there is no definite finish line and the bronze tone shades the eye to lift, adding warmth and depth.
The fresh nude lip, rather than a cream tone lifts the entire face, giving fresh colour, not over-powering the eye, which is the focus.
Special mention to Red Carpet royalty, Sofia Vergara, who always serves up some serious bold lip – winning on her olive tone skin!
Naomi Watts and Cate Blanchett also rocked the carpet for the Aussies, showing colour can be worn on a Red Carpet with pure elegance.
In closing, my advice to anyone looking for beauty style inspo from the Oscar’s – invest in great brushes. They make any product blend seamlessly and when layering products like you do in todays world of makeup, a good brush goes along away for these modern, effortless, chic looks from today’s red carpet.
