It was a night of poolside glamour, Italian Riviera touches with Australian talent on showcase. The catwalk was filled with beauty from head to toe and great to see new textures mixed with colour, rocking the first of the store wars with David Jones.
With shu uemura as the makeup partner and Aveda once again for hair, it was a match made in heaven for the fresh, modern, summery yet chic approach that we saw strut down the stunning white runway on Level 7 at David Jones Sydney.
Make-up
Shu uemura flew out Uchiide-San from Japan, International Artistic Director for the brand and one of Mr Shu Uemura’s protégé’s.
As an ex National Trainer for shu uemura, I am very familiar with the brand and Uchiide-San’s work – it really is always works of Art.
Shu uemura has a very specific application technique and one part of that technique that I still think about and apply today, is that when applying makeup, especially complexion products, you need to look past the skin and think of the muscle movement on the face.
This will determine the movement of makeup on the face and if you apply makeup heavily on areas that have high expression, your makeup will fall into crease lines and look heavier than originally thought.
Uchiide-san’s tip from the show – “Do not ‘paint’ the face, everything applied should fit and adapt so well, it comes from within.”
After all, the shu uemura brand statement is ‘Beautiful Makeup Starts with Beautiful Skin’
The Spring Summer makeup trend is about fresh skin but still giving shape to the face with accents on the cheeks, a defined eye or lash and an all round elegant glow that a European Summer skin would have.
Shu uemura showcased two stunning looks with hints of gold on both, giving a sheen of a balmy night and a very summery effect.
Both looks had the models skin prepped with shu uemura Instant Glow Stage Performer and the Face Architect Illuminating Moisture Fluid Foundation for that perfect second skin, sheer summer glow – skin being key for any shu uemura beauty look.
Look 1
“Embrace Balmy nights with shu uemura’s incredibly chic colour palette to enhance your beauty. A dark winged eye, embellished with a dash of gold on the lid, highlights the eyes under lights, complimented with a soft sheer glow on the cheek and a matt nude lip”.

Look 1 had the defined eye as a feature, almost a modern 60’s influence with the matching ‘bee hive’ look from Aveda.
The shu uemura painting liner in gold was used first in a thick line from lash into the mobile lid with the Painting Liner in Black then used at lash line with a slight upwards lift to give elegance! Love this!
Look 2
“She is the youthful, fun shu uemura girl who spends long languid days by the pool, with elegant lashes and glossy lips taking her look from day to night”.

Apart from the gorgeous skin glow created, the focus in this look was the touch of gold as a wash across the lid – shu uemura pressed shadow in soft gold ME335 and then those famous and iconic shu uemura slant black lashes!
The gold touches perfect with such a diverse fashion colour range during the show and lit the skin perfectly. Lips were then layered with Gloss Unlimted in BR10S.

Hair
Aveda are known for their natural yet creative, plus very wearable hair designs from previous David Jones Fashion Launches – gotta love when it is wearable!
I loved the simplicity, or effortless looks from the runway that you could wear so easily all through summer to keep your look fresh, modern and still very chic and elegant!
Look 1
The 60’s inspired modern French Roll that can really be as subtle or dramatic as you desire. I love the modern take, not being so pulled back, allowing for subtle movement.
*Aveda Hair Stylist Terry with Model Samantha Harris
Under the direction of Celebrity Hair Stylist Daren Borthwick, who has been directing hair for David Jones for many years, Terry (pictured), explained to me that it is all about a big brush for teasing, not a comb and start at the front, then work around to the back!
One of the main products used was the Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep – this adds volume and creates that strong foundation to create your look.
To smooth and add shine the team used Aveda Light Elements Smoothing Fluid and Aveda Air Control Hairspray to set the finished product.
Look 2
This Poolside Chic approach was nice and relaxed; you can just imagine this look suiting any woman relaxing in summer with out looking over styled. The prep is key to this soft look to keep it looking fresh while maintaining definition and texture.
Texture is really a big trend at the moment, and adding too much product can weigh the hair down, so having the right product is vital.
Adding a slight, not too placed part can give a little volume to the top of the head with one side swept over.
Aveda’s Phomollient Styling Foam was used on dry hair, by twisting the hair softly; this will encourage texture and style.
It is important for this look for the hairline to be frizz-free; the look needs to be groomed, yet relaxed to work well with movement and shape.
Using Aveda Air Control hairspray can sweep front layers across the forehead and set with a light mist.
Overall I loved the relaxed, yet very elegant and modern take on both makeup and hair!
Beauty we see on the runway should be able to come to reality at home and both brands have achieved this for this seasons David Jones Fashion Launch – everyone get their texture and hints of gold on to feel summery!
